Recycling metal provides sustainability within the industry by allowing new products to be created whilst using fewer natural resources and omitting less carbon emissions. 60% of copper produced in the 1900’s is still in use today.

As the global economy is constantly growing there is always a demand for scrap metal. Last year, 10 million tonnes of metal were recycled in the UK. As the UK produces considerably more scrap than is required for domestic markets, 90 percent was exported worldwide. In fact, the UK is one of the five largest metal scrap exporting countries in the world.

EU figures indicate that using recycled raw materials (including metals) cuts CO2 emissions by some 200 million tonnes every year. Using recycled steel to make new steel reduces air pollution by 86 percent, water use by 40 percent and water pollution by 76 percent.

Metal recycling conserves the need for natural resources. As a secondary raw material, scrap metal decreases the demand for mining new material which requires less energy to process. Natural resources are finite which is another reason recycling is so important, scrap metal has an infinite life cycle.
